Responding to the character of St Stephen's Road
Every successful development begins by understanding the place in which it sits.
Before preparing the design, the project team undertook a detailed assessment of the surrounding area, considering building heights, architectural styles, landscaping, neighbouring properties, views and movement around the site.
Rather than copying neighbouring buildings, the design seeks to respond to them in a contemporary way.
One of the defining characteristics of the proposal is that it has been designed as three individual "villa" buildings connected through a shared entrance, rather than one large apartment block.
This approach breaks down the overall scale of the building, creating a design that reflects the surrounding streetscape whilst giving each part of the building its own identity.
The roof design has also evolved from careful analysis of the surrounding area. Traditional pitched roofs dominate the residential streets to the west, while flatter roof forms become more common towards the larger educational buildings to the east.
The proposed roofscape provides a transition between these two different architectural characters, helping the building sit comfortably within its surroundings.
